28 Nov 2012: In the first and third photos, at the ghats (stairs where you can descend to the river), plateaus are made that are used for the open air cremations that take place on a daily basis. The cremations that attract many visitors, both Nepalese and foreign visitors. This is because in many cultures, cremations are private affairs. Plateaus in the first photos are for average people and in the third photos are for the rich.

In the fourth photo, a cremation is in progress with the family and friends watching.

In the second photo, pilgrims are also seen at bathing spots.

Initially, the physical condition of the river shock me and washing, bathing and cremating take place all at the bank of the same river.

Then again, isn’t life and death so close to each other?
